Team Apex Takes Top-Fives at Miller

05/17/2009

Tooele, UT - With three young eager rookie drivers making the trip out West to Utah, Team Apex USA was hoping to make the most of a triple-header race weekend at Miller Motorsports Park. But despite showing good pace through the weekend, the team will have to look ahead to the next round to target a return to the podium in the 2009 Formula BMW Americas Championship.

The race weekend, staged as part of the Larry H. Miller Dealerships American Le Mans event, was the first three-race weekend of the season for the team, which once again boasted an international roster of racers in James Kovacic (Australia), Martin Sala (Colombia), and Joao Victor Horto (Brazil).

Horto lead the qualifying effort for Team Apex for round 5 as he scored 4th on the grid for the standing-start race. But it was Kovacic who was ahead at the checkers for the team, taking three 5th-place results on the weekend as Sala and Horto were also top-ten finishers.

“This weekend didn’t turn out as we had been hoping it would,” said Team Apex Director of Commercial Development David Hunt. “The guys had been making a lot of progress, and we were pretty encouraged with how quickly they picked up this track in the test days and felt optimistic about the races. But we just didn’t get the results from the weekend that we were targeting after a little bit of bad racing luck. But I know the guys will take what they learned this weekend and put it to good use at Lime Rock. We’ve been strong there before, so that’s our focus now, to get back up on the podium there and get a good start to the second half of the season.”

Team Apex will look to make the most of the break before returning to action for rounds 8 and 9 of the 2009 season, set in BMW’s back yard at Lime Rock Park.
